Completing the Internet Safety assignment showed me information already on the Internet that can help teach children about the risks of the Internet and how to protect themselves on the Internet. One great website is NSTeens.org. I was able to use several videos from the site for my PPT. The site is geared more towards students in middle and high school. I sent the link to our technology teacher so that she can use it in her classes. My PPT focused more on cyberbullying, posting too much information and copyright issues. I focused more on these topics because I've noticed these issues with students at my school. We had more issues with it last year than we've had this year...so far. One student posts something about another student and then there is a girl fight in the hallway or feelings are hurt. I've seen posts and pictures that children in my school have posted and it makes me sick how they are ruining their image/reputation.
I think Internet Safety is something that should be taught to students every year. It is something that is constantly changing and students need to be protected. Students need to understand what is appropriate and inappropriate when using the Internet and also to be held accountable for their actions. This assignment was definitely beneficial to me and now I have a presentation to use with my students that is age appropriate.
Cyberbullying is such a huge issue now-a-days. I teach elementary school so it isn't as prevalent as it probably is with your middle school students, but it is still something that I feel like the younger students need to know about. I like how chose to focus on cyberbullying in your PowerPoint since that is an area that you feel the staff at your school needs more information about.
ReplyDeleteAs common as Internet use is, Internet safety should definitely be a part of the curriculum for students of all ages. The Internet can be such a useful tool, but so quickly it can become something very dangerous as well. I'm glad that your presentation will be something that your students can benefit from!
That's great that you were able immediately to use the Power Point you created with your kids. I hadn't thought about cyber bullying too much before this assignment and the training we are doing at school since I have the younger students, but it seems awful. The thought of those postings you mentioned made me sad. These poor kids are already struggling with so much at that awkward age that adding being bullied on the interned, through phone texts, etc. is terrible.
ReplyDeleteBy the way, did you change your background? I like the fall motif. Might have to think about re-doing mine. :)
I enjoyed looking this information up and found it very interesting and useful.
ReplyDeleteI haven't heard to much about Cyber-Bullying at my elementary school. But I definitely see the harm it can cause. The more recent thing I can think how the internet is used inappropriately it about is the college roommate who outed his roommates homosexual pics/video. As a result, the roommate killed himself.
People do not take into account what there actions can do. Students need to be taught how to use the internet safely and they need to be made aware the consequences a little joke can play on someone. .
