I found some great videos for my SS class on The Great Depression and the New Deal Programs. I actually used Zamzar to convert the YouTube file so that I could show it at school (as youtube is blocked). I've used Teachertube in the past but it is sometimes difficult to bring up as it takes a while to load. I like searching YouTube and TeacherTube videos as they are usually quick and to the point. Here is one of the New Deal videos I found...
In the past, I was able to download a Suite Life of Zack and Cody episode to share with the class on the Boston Tea Party. One of my students suggested the episode and I was able to find what I needed on TeacherTube. These sites are great for showing bits and pieces of related content at school without having to fast forward or show entire videos. We are able to cut out unrelated content to get to the important stuff.
I love that Zamzar fixes the biggest problem with YouTube...the fact that it is blocked in schools. I have found a lot of great resources on YouTube and TeacherTube. I've also noticed that TeacherTube can be a little slow, but it seems to move much quicker when I'm logged into my account. I think that it's the slowest when several teachers on my hallway are trying to access the same video (but they may just be in my head). You made a good point about the fact that these videos allow us to zoom in on what's really important inside of fast forwarding or watching a whole video that may not be entirely relevant. Overall, I think that videosharing is a great resource in the classroom.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad you were able to get Zamzar to work for you. It can be kind of tricky sometimes. I bet you can find lots of great Social Studies videos on Youtube. I love the efficiency of the smaller video segment options in TeacherTube, as well. I agree with Jena, Videosharing is a wonderful resource to have for the classroom. Do you have an account for United Streaming? They have a lot of great videos, video segments, lesson plans, and images to use with your class.
ReplyDeleteYouTube does have some really good stuff to show for SS. I used it recently for our unit on George Washington Carver. So thankful for Zamzar making it possible to show these videos at school. I love that you used a Suite Life show to relate it to your studies. I'm sure the kids loved that! It's things like that that really get their attention and help them relate to what we are teaching.
ReplyDeleteCheryl's right about Discovery Education (formerly United Streaming). It's a great resource.
YouTube is a great resource for educational videos. It is a shame that we can't use the website at school. Thank you for the great idea about using Zamzar to convert the file. I will have to try this next time. I have also found that TeacherTube does seem to work better if you are logged into your account but can run slow when you are working wireless. I love to you videosharing in my room. It seems to catch the children's attention.
ReplyDeleteI agree with sarah about youtube, it is too bad that it can't be used in schools... Zamzar is awesome for fixing this, tho, although more time consuming than just being able to pull up the video directly. This video on the New Deal is so authentic and isn't something you can just tell to the kids or show pictures of. To watch an older video like this, straight out of time, is a great little slice of history.
