ITEC 7430: Thing 5
The item I found most interesting in my Google Reader was the Teacher Zone:Ten Marks website (http://teacher.tenmarks.com/). The reason it popped out to me was because I saw the word MATH! I'm always looking for ways to make math more interesting and to find ways to incorporate technology. I like this site because it has relevant 8th grade material that I can use. There are videos explaining many of the topics covered in 8th grade math. I could use this site with students who were out the day new material was taught or I can use it to help those that did not understand the material the first time it was taught. A sub could also show a video for material needed when I am out. There are also other grade level videos available that I can use for my students that need lower or higher ability work. This is definitely a site I can share with the math department at my school.

I really like how you thought to use this in you room. It is a way to help those children that need that extra help or need to just hear what to do one more time. The idea on using it with subs is awesome. It would help to ensure that the children still were learning even if you were sick at home. Have you run into the problem with children unable to access it at home? Does each child need to have an email account to do this.
ReplyDeleteI went in search of science items. There were some websites that I would look at from time to time. I checked to see if they had the orange square to add them to my reader. Being able to use keywords is fantastic. Now I take a few minutes to check everyday to see if there is anything of interest. Does save time. I like the idea of using it for subs. Posting items that match to what a class is discussing is also a great idea. At my school we have a school/teacher website were we can post and add links for extra help to the students. I am also on the look out for new exciting sites with the orange square.
ReplyDeleteI need to start using my reader in this way. So far, I've only used it for personal info related to grad school stuff. I am looking forward now to taking it to the next level to find neat things, like you did, to use with my students.
ReplyDeleteRSS feeds are still tricky for me as the sources that are presented work for me as a teacher. However, I can't quite figure how it would be of use to a student. I would assume if some sites listed an RSS feed and the articles were of utility for the content of the class, then it would be worth referencing on occasion in the classroom. Like Yvonne says, how do we take it to the next level?
ReplyDeleteAs I was reading about the RSS, I immediately began to think about twitting. I think that RSS Feeds gives a great opportunity for upper level students to keep up with information going on in the world. Especially for someone who does not watch the news. The students will have to do the initial set up but once it is done they will be set and can instantly receive and retrieve information. I like the idea of using RSS to have your SS class keep up on current events and then allowing them to journal their thoughts in their reader is an awesome idea.
